Barre Class Glossary: Key Terms You’ll Hear in Barre at Barre Forte University Hills

Stepping into a barre class for the first time can be exciting, but the unique terminology might seem unfamiliar. Don’t worry— you’re not expected to have these memorized, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. However, if you’re curious here’s a quick guide to some common terms you’ll encounter in a barre class at Barre Forte University Hills:

Tuck: Engage your core by pulling your belly button towards your spine and slightly tilting your pelvis under. This position helps protect your lower back and engages your abs, glutes, and thighs.

Pulse: Perform small, controlled movements in a specific range of motion to keep your muscles under constant tension, enhancing endurance and strength.

Relevé: Rise onto the balls of your feet, engaging your calves, thighs, and core. This position is used to increase the intensity of various exercises.

Plie: Bend your knees while keeping your heels on the ground, targeting your inner and outer thighs, glutes, and calves.

Parallel: Stand with your feet hip-width apart and pointing straight ahead. This stance targets the quads and glutes.

First Position: Heels together, toes turned out to form a V-shape. This stance works the inner thighs, glutes, and calves.

Second Position: Feet wider than hip-width apart with toes turned out. This stance allows for deeper squats and plies, targeting the inner thighs, glutes, and hamstrings.

Hold: Maintain the current position to isolate muscles and increase endurance, building strength and stability.

Round Back: Sit on the floor with bent legs, feet flat, and back rounded in a C-shape to engage the core, particularly the lower abs.

Flat Back: Maintain a straight spine with engaged core muscles to protect your back and ensure proper alignment during exercises.

Isometric Hold: Hold a muscle contraction without moving, such as holding a plank position, to build strength and endurance.
